What are Reed Diffusers?
Those of us interested in the world of home decor and/or self-care have probably come across an oil reed diffuser at least once in our travels. They may look like nothing more than pretty little wooden sticks, but reed diffusers are so much more potent than many people give them credit for.
It all starts with a mixture of oils poured into a small vessel, often a glass bottle. Reed sticks, sometimes made of rattan wood or a synthetic alternative (CAN WE WE INPUT HERE WHAT MALIE’S ARE MADE OF) are then put into the same container. The mixture of oils gets absorbed by the sticks through capillary action. As the oils soak into the reeds, they diffuse into the air and emit a fragrance.
How to Use Reed Diffusers
As you may have been able to guess, using oil reed diffusers is easy as can be. All you need to do is open the diffuser, put the reeds in, and flip them one time to allow the aroma to infiltrate your space. From there, you can adjust the intensity of the fragrance by adding or removing reeds and repositioning where they are grouped. The more reeds that are in the oil reed diffuser, the more concentrated the scent will be. Additionally, the closer the reeds are to each other, the more restricted the airflow will be. This is fine for smaller rooms like powder rooms, but if you’re looking to spread the scent out throughout a larger space, it’s best to separate the reeds and disperse them a bit more evenly. Reeds should also be flipped weekly or more for a stronger scent.
Choosing the Right Reed Diffuser Oil
The type of oil you use for your reed diffuser will make a huge difference in how you experience this product, so it’s important to choose wisely.
Criteria for Choosing Reed Diffuser Oil
How it’s Made
This is a critical component of the process. While just about any lightweight oil will technically suffice, important to remember is that it’s going to diffuse into your home. That means you need to think about the quality of what you want getting dispersed throughout your space. Essential oils that come from ethical sources are best.
At Malie, our reed diffuser oils are made from 100% perfume oil and do not contain any alcohol. This makes them exceptionally high quality and means they’ll last for quite a while.
The Scent
As long as you’re sure you’re using a high quality reed diffuser oil, all you really need to worry about next is the scent! Our best advice is to go with something you love and that you’ll want to come home to.

Benefits of Oil Reed Diffusers
From the scent to the ease of use, there are plenty of reasons to opt for an oil reed diffuser in your home.
Easy to Use
All you have to do is open the diffuser container, drop a few reeds in, and flip them once. It’s really as simple as that. No maintenance, no checking on a burning flame, and no worrying required!
Long Lasting Fragrance
Malie’s oil reed diffusers are made from pure perfume oil without any alcohol to preserve their integrity and keep them long lasting. The lack of alcohol prevents the oil from evaporating too quickly. Full size reed diffusers last an impressive 1-2 years, while mini versions last 3-4 months.
Sustainable Fragrance
The bottles can be reused time and time again, making this an eco-friendly and sustainable way to disperse fragrance into your home. When you’re nearing the end of the oil reserve, you can upcycle your bottle to use as a beautiful vase!
Can’t choose just one scent? Our Island Ambiance Gift Set comes complete with 3 customer favorites: plumeria, koke’e, and pikake. Try them all to experience Hawaiian aromatherapy like never before.
