Why Mango Butter Is The Ultimate Skin Care Ingredient
You may have heard of cocoa butter and you may have heard of shea butter but the hottest ticket in town is now mango butter. While mango butter is nothing new to the beauty industry, it is having a moment in mainstream culture, which means it’s time to shine a light on the ingredient.
Spoiler alert: Malie Organics has actually been using mango butter as one of the key ingredients in many of our products for years! We’ve been well aware of why mango butter for skin is so beneficial but now it’s time to share it with all of you. Learning about the various uses of mango butter for skin and how it can improve your skin care journey could change everything…for the better.
What is Mango Butter?
Most people are familiar with mangoes; this sweet, juicy, delicious fruit is the epitome of tropical paradise. With that being said, “butter” isn’t necessarily the next thing you think of in conjunction with mangoes. Well, as it turns out, it should be!
Not sure what mango butter is? We’re here to explain. Mango butter is a soft, moisturizing substance that comes from the seed of the mango fruit. Semi-solid, it’s rich in antioxidants, Vitamins A, B1, B6, C, and E, fatty acids, and copper, phytosterols, polyphenols, and squalene. Who knew mango was so magnificent?
How Mango Butter is Made
This soothing agent can be made either via a cold-press process or with a solvent extraction. With the cold press method, the mango fruit seed is put through a hydraulic press machine to extract the oil used to create the butter.
With the solvent extraction method, the mango seeds are collected, washed, and then sun-dried to reduce the amount of moisture in them. They’re then roasted in a drum roaster, after which the hulls are removed. Then the seeds are sent to a hammer mill, turned into pellets, and cooled. At this point, they can undergo the solvent extraction and can be turned into a creamy consistency. Finally, voila! Mango Butter!
Best Sources of Mango Butter
These days, lots of skincare products contain mango butter, which means it’s easier than ever to reap its benefits. You could try to get it in its raw form but since so many beauty brands now incorporate it into their products, it only makes sense to seek it out from natural beauty companies you already know and trust.
Benefits of Mango Butter
Now onto the question we all really care about: what are the benefits of mango butter for your skin? Sadly, mango butter does not smell like mango because it comes from the fruit's seed and not the fruit's juicy part. However, the good it can do for your skin more than makes up for that.
Acts as a Natural Moisturizer
It may be light in density but mango butter is highly moisturizing. With fast-acting absorption, mango butter conditions the skin to enhance its smoothness and suppleness.
Preserves Moisture Content
Not only does mango butter moisturize, smooth, and soften, but it helps skin stay that way. It does this by acting as an emollient, which means it protects and lubricates the surface of the skin to preserve its texture for the long term.
Useful for Anti-Aging
Signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines can pop up at various stages of life and some people experience them more prominently than others. A good way to potentially combat them may be with mango butter. The vitamin A in mango butter is an antioxidant that helps with cell turnover, thereby improving skin’s elasticity and keeping it firm and youthful looking.
Good for Acne
Anyone who struggles with acne knows that it’s a challenge to find the right skincare ingredients. You want something that is neither too drying nor too oily. Overdrying skin can lead to excess oil production, but introducing too much oil can clog pores. Mango butter is good for the skin because it contains some oil but not too much. It is non-comedogenic, lightweight, and non-greasy so it won’t feel heavy on your skin.
Anti-Inflammatory & Anti-Bacterial
Part of why mango butter is so good for the skin is because of the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties it contains. Research suggests that mango butter can halt the reproduction of bacteria, making it a valuable addition to anyone’s skincare routine who suffers from inflammation and breakouts.
Great for Sensitive Skin
People with psoriasis, eczema, and mild forms of dermatitis may find relief by using mango butter. These skin concerns require extra moisture and protection, which is exactly what mango butter delivers.
Scar Remedy
Scars and stretch marks can make even the most confident of individuals a bit self-conscious. Not only can mango butter help soften the appearance of existing scars and stretch marks, but it can also be used preventatively. For example, people who are pregnant may find that moisturizing with mango butter helps as the skin stretches and changes.
